COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Westminster women's volleyball team was wept in three sets by UC Colorado Springs in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Friday night at the Gallogly Events Center.
Westminster (3-6, 0-1 RMAC) was playing in its first-ever RMAC match and fell by scores of 25-18, 25-23, 25-23.
UCCS (6-4, 1-0) tallied 49 kills in the match and held the visiting Griffins to only 32. That was a key to the match as both teams hit .202 and had 43 digs. Westminster gave up seven service aces while only getting one themselves and they posted five blocks.
A trio of Griffins finished the match with seven kills, including
Jessica Chellsen who hit .400 and had two digs.
Desiree Wickwar got her seven while hitting .357 with three blocks and
Amara Culpepper had two blocks with her seven kills.
Megan Gallegos notched 12 digs and
Taylor Gustafson and
Jacey Saunders finished with 15 assists apiece.
The first set saw UCCS hit .250 and record a 15-9 advantage in kills. The Griffins picked thing sup in the second set by getting 12 kills and hitting .333, but they allowed 15 kills to the Cougars who scored four straight points after the set was even at 19-19.
Westminster would lead the third set 15-11 before the home squad put a 9-2 run together to take the lead for good. The Griffins would close within 22-21, but they couldn't overcome 19 kills in the set by UCCS.
Kim Catlett has 21 kills and hit .425 for UCCS and her teammate Cassidy Bush added 10 kills.
The Griffins will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Denver to face MSU Denver at 4 p.m.
