Griffins Open RMAC Play with 2-1 Win against Colorado Christian

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's soccer team defeated Colorado Christian 2-1 on Friday afternoon at Dumke Field in the team's first-ever Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game.

Westminster (4-0, 1-0 RMAC) didn't take long to get an early advantage as Madison Roemer notched her first goal of the season in the ninth minute. Roemer forced a turnover and then fired a shot inside the left post from 20 yards out on the right side.

The Griffins controlled the action during the first half and ended the period with a 9-0 edge in shots, but they only led 1-0 at the break.

Colorado Christian (0-4-1, 0-1) would find the equalizer in the 52nd minute when Mariah Fredericks slid a shot under the Griffins keeper, Abi Yanke, after collecting a through ball played in by Gabriele Blahnik. The goal was the first surrendered by the Griffins in 270 minutes of play dating back to the season opener on September 3.

Less than three minutes later the Griffins got the winner from Rylei North. After Roemer played the ball to North at the top of the penalty area, the senior created space and put her left-footed shot to the inside of the left post for her fourth goal of the season.

That advantage would hold and Westminster finished the game with a 13-6 edge in shot attempts with five shots on goal. North finished the game with five shots and Yanke earned the win in goal by making two saves.

The Griffins will return to Dumke Field on Sunday at noon when they host preseason RMAC favorite Colorado School of Mines.
