SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Westminster women's volleyball team snapped a six-match losing skid with a 3-0 sweep of Black Hills State in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match at the Donald E. Young Center on Friday night.
The win is the 400th career victory as a collegiate head coach for the Griffins coach,
Al Givens.
Westminster (6-16, 3-11 RMAC) took the opening two sets, 25-23 and 25-16, and getting 14 kills in each of the frames. They would then close out the match by posting 17 kills and hitting .417 to earn the sweep with the 25-14 win.
Amara Culpepper led a Griffin offense that had 45 kills be notching 16 herself. The sophomore hit .341 with only two errors.
Jessica Chellsen added 10 kills on .450 hitting as she moves closer to 500 for her career.
The Griffins held Black Hills State (7-15, 4-10) to 36 kills in the match and just .131 hitting. The visitors had a 62-52 advantage in digs with three service aces and five blocks.
Taylor Gustafson totaled 25 assists and
Megan Gallegos had 10 digs for the Griffins.
Black Hills State was led by eight kills from Danielle Torpey. Lacy Stevens had 19 digs in defeat.
Westminster will look for consecutive wins for the first time this season when they play at South Dakota Mines on Saturday night. The Halloween match from Rapid City, S.D. is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at will be carried live on Griffins TV.
