SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's soccer team continued its early season dominance with a 4-0 win over Northwestern (Iowa) on Friday evening at Dumke Field in the first game of the Griffin Invitational.
Westminster (5-0-1) got on the board early when
Rylei North put her left-footed shot inside the far post in the games third minute. The goal is the sixth-fastest goal in school history and eventually turned into her second game-winner of the year.
Madison Roemer gave the Griffins a 2-0 advantage in the 25th minute when her shot from 20 yards curved inside the left post for her second goal of the year.
Lexi Tucker played the ball to Roemer at the top of the penalty area to notch her first assist this season.
After taking the 2-0 lead into halftime where they held an 11-0 edge in shot attempts, Westminster pushed the advantage to 3-0 in the 49th minute. North created space with a light touch and then put her shot past the Northwestern (1-4) keeper for her second goal of the game and third of the season. This marked the fourth multi-goal game in her career and moves her into second place all-time in that category.
The final goal of the game came in the 56th minute on a brilliant strike from Tucker. After a Northwestern defender cleared the ball out of the penalty area, it found the foot of Tucker over 30 yards out from goal. She lifted a shot to the far post that was just over the keeper's reach and into the net for Tucker's third goal of the year.
Westminster would finished the evening with 18 total shot attempts and they were able to put 11 of those on goal. The home squad had a 13-1 edge in corner kicks as they limited the visitors to just two shots in the game and only one on goal.
Abi Yanke earned her fifth win of the season in goal and lowered her season goals-against-average to 0.17.
Breanna Empey made her first-career appearance and made one save in 27 minutes.
After taking Saturday off, the Griffins will return to the pitch on Sunday morning when they face Corban (Ore.). The final game of the Griffin Invitational will begin at 10 a.m. MT and Dumke Field.
