SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's soccer team used goals 83 minutes apart to take a 2-1 win over Corban (Ore.) on Sunday afternoon at Dumke Field in the final game of the Griffin Invitational.
Westminster (6-0-1) opened the scoring in just the second minute of action when
Jennifer Beaudoin connected for her first goal for her season.
Abby Holbrook delivered a throw-in to the penalty area where
Madison Roemer flicked it with her head to the foot of Beaudoin for the shot.
Despite being outshot 8-3 in the first half, Corban was able to get an equalizer less than three minutes before halftime. After a turnover in the Griffins end, Sadee Kallis played a ball to Katelyn Fekkes on the run just inside the penalty area. Fekkes took her first touch and chipped the ball over Westminster's keeper,
Abi Yanke, and into the goal for her third goal of the season.
The Griffins had opportunities throughout the second half, but they couldn't finish any of those chances until the 85th minute. Beaudoin played a through ball from midfield down the left side where
Lexi Tucker ran onto it. With her first touch, Tucker played the ball along the goal line and to the foot of
Nicole Carter for her first goal of the season and the Westminster victory.
Westminster finished the game with a 20-5 edge is total shots and they put 11 of those attempts on goal. The Griffins also held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks and they saw Corban's keeper, Sheyenne Brusven, make eight saves with another shot turned away by a defender.
Holbrook led all players with five shot attempts and she put three on frame. Her best chance came in the 81st minute when she blasted a shot from 25 yards away that Brusven tapped into the crossbar to keep the game level at the moment.
Rylei North took four shots with three on goal for the Griffins.
Yanke earned her sixth win of the year in goal with one save.
The Griffins will now take to the road for three games in the Mich. area. They begin at Marygrove (Mich.) on Friday at 10 a.m. MT in Detroit.
