LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The Westminster College men's snowboard team will enter the final day of competition at the USCSA National Championships on Saturday tied with Sierra Nevada College in the race for the national championship. Westminster put themselves in that position after placing third in the Slopestyle event on Wed. and then finishing second in the Snowboard-X on Thur.
Saturday's final event is the Giant Slalom with the top-placing team between Westminster and Sierra Nevada winning the 2014 title. The Griffins have finished runner-up to SNC at the National Championships is each of the past five years. The Giant Slalom races will begin at 8 a.m. MDT on Sat. morning.
The Griffins finished second in the Slopestyle after scoring 13 points.
Owen Golden scored 80.3 in his final run to place third in the event to lead all Griffins.
Mal Prior finished in eighth position with a 45.7 and
Ryan McGowan was ninth with his score of 36.3.
Aidan Melen would finish in the 14th position with
Thomas Graham placing 25th.
After placing all five riders in the final bracket of 32 in the Snowboard-X competition, Westminster recorded a second-place finish with 22 points. Prior and Melen advanced to the semi-finals before finishing sixth and seventh respectively in the consolation bracket. Graham, McGowan and Golden all advanced to the quarterfinal round before being eliminated.
