Griffins Sweep All Four National Titles on Tuesday

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The Westminster College snowboard team opened the 2014 USCSA National Championships by sweeping all four national title given out on Tuesday. The Griffin men claimed both the Quarter-Pipe and Rail Jam competitions while the women did the same.

The Westminster women started a quest for a sixth-straight USCSA national championship by winning the Quarter-Pipe competition with 12 points. Kirby Kelly used her second-run score of 65.0 to win the individual title in the event. Lexi Sinor scored a 51.6 to place fifth with Jaime Vincent in sixth after a score of 49.6. Ali Appleton (49.0) and Cassandra Davis (46.0) finished eighth and ninth respectively.

The women would also take the national title in the first-ever Rail Jam competition. Davis was the top-placing Griffin in third with Sinor coming in fourth. Kirby earned a sixth-place finish while Appleton finished right behind in seventh.

The Griffin men would take home national championship honors in the Quarter-Pipe after edging out Sierra Nevada by three points. Mal Prior finished second in the event with his 71.3 score posted in his second run. Aidan Melen used a 65.3 to finished third with Owen Golden in fourth at 53.0. Thomas Graham scored a 36.0 to finish 10th and Ryan McGowan finished 11th at 29.3.

To complete the sweep on four national titles on the opening day of the event, the Westminster men took home the title in the Rail Jam. Anchored by a second-place finish from Golden the Griffins scored 15 points to hold off Liberty for the championship. Prior finished fourth in the event with Melen placing ninth to score for the team. McGowan would finish in 11th and Graham placed 23rd.

The USCSA National Championships continue on Wednesday with the Slopestyle competitions.
