Big Second Half Carries Griffins Past Firestorm

SALT LAKE CITY – The No. 4 Westminster women's basketball team remained perfect on the season with a 73-42 win over Arizona Christian in the final game of the Westminster Fall Classic on Saturday night in the Behnken Field House.
 
Westminster (4-0) wasn't able to get in any rhythm on offense as they shot just 42.1 percent from the floor. The Griffins went 6-of-22 from beyond the arc to finish with a season-low 27.3 percent from deep. The defense would carry them through as they held Arizona Christian (1-5) to 37.5 percent from the floor and forced 24 Firestorm turnovers.
 
Leading 20-16 with 10:44 to play in the first half, the Griffins closed the period with a 12-3 run to lead 32-19 at halftime. ACU committed 10 turnovers during the span and made only one of five field goal attempts. After the visitors trimmed the deficit back to nine at the 13:04 mark of the second half, Westminster scored 33 of the game's next 43 points to reach the largest lead of 31 with 1:19 to play.
 
The Griffins had a 35-31 edge in rebounds and they scored 19 points from 13 offensive rebounds. They scored 30 points in the paint with 17 assists and only six turnovers. Westminster got 22 points off turnovers while notching 14 steals.
 
Amanda Hacking led the Griffins with a career-high 17 points and eight rebounds. The senior went 5-of-9 from the floor and she made seven of her 10 free throw attempts. Three of her rebounds came on the offensive end to go with three steals and one assist.
 
Tia Pappas and Alli Winters scored 13 points apiece for the Griffins with Amy Krommenhoek adding 11. Winters finished with six assists while Krommenhoek had five assists and no turnovers. Katie Richens finished with six points and seven rebounds off the bench.
 
ACU was led by 15 points from Sophia Anaya. She finished 4-of-7 from beyond the arc and pulled in six rebounds. Jazmin Mays added 12 points and six rebounds.
 
Westminster will now be on the road until conference play begins in January. The next game comes on Nov. 21 when they visit No. 23 Hope International (Calif.) in Fullerton, Calif.
