Women Take Down Western for Fifth Straight Victory

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The fourth-ranked Westminster College women's basketball team continued its roll through the Frontier Conference with a 76-43 win over Montana Western on Saturday afternoon in the Behnken Field House.

Westminster used a fifth straight victory to improve to 12-2 on the season and they move to 6-0 in the Frontier Conference. The loss drops Montana Western to 8-8 overall and 2-4 in the league.

After Western scored the first six points of the game, the Griffins tallied the next 14 points to spark a 21-2 run. Amy Krommenhoek scored eight points during the run and Shelby Ellsworth added six. Westminster would carry that momentum into a 41-21 lead at halftime after shooting 47.2 percent in the period.

The Griffins would put the game away with a 17-4 run over a seven-minute stretch in the second half to build a 33 point cushion. Kelsi Wells and Brooke Blonquist scored four points apiece during the run and the team held Western to 2-of-9 shooting with four turnovers.

Westminster finished the game shooting 48.5 percent from the floor, but the nation's top 3-point shooting team made just six of its 21 attempts (28.6%) from beyond the arc. They scored 36 points in the paint while recording 21 assists to only nine turnovers. The Griffins limited UMW to 35.4 percent from the field and 12.5 percent from three. They turned 20 UMW turnovers into 33 points and used 17 offensive rebounds for 17 points.

Ellsworth led four Griffins in double figures with 12 points and she also grabbed five rebounds and handed out four assists. Tia Pappas filled the stat sheet with 11 points, seven rebounds (five offensive), five assists, four steals and two blocked shots. Krommenhoek finished with 11 and Katie Richens added a career-high 11 to spark a 39-13 advantage from the bench.

Western got nine points from Sammi Bignell and seven apiece from McCall Hasquet and Baylie Smith.

The Griffins will remain at home for two games next week starting on Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. MST contest with Rocky Mountain (Mont.) in the Behnken Field House.
