Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women's lacrosse team put on a rally, but they came up a little short in a 13-11 loss to Colorado Mesa on Saturday afternoon at Judge Memorial Catholic School.

Westminster (3-2) started a little slow in the team's first game since Feb. 16. Colorado Mesa scored the first four goals of the game, including a strike from Ashley Eickoff just 1:07 into the game. Chelsea Farrell would get the Griffins on the board with her goal at the 18 minute mark of the opening half. Dana Barraco scored twice in 13 seconds to cut the Westminster deficit to 7-5 with 2:25 left, only to see Paige Amme score her third goal of the half as time expired to give CMU the 8-5 lead at intermission.

After Kelsey Kerbs scored for CMU just 45 seconds into the second half, Westminster went on a streak. The Griffins scored the next four goals, including back-to-back from Maggie HerrNeckar to start the stretch, and with 19:46 remaining the game was tied for the first time at 9-9.  The teams would trade goals over the next 13 minutes to remaining tied at 11-1 with 6:20 to play with the Griffins goals coming from Kaicee Beal and HerrNeckar.

Westminster would get four shots off trying to take their first lead of the game, but none of them would get past CMU goalie Lauren Wells. The final shot was saved by Wells who then sent the ball all the way into the attacking zone where she found Eickoff on the run. Eickoff would break past a Griffin defender and strike the game-winner with 1:19 on the clock. After CMU won the draw control, Eickoff added an insurance goal with 47 seconds to play.

The Griffins finished the game with a 27-22 edge in shots attempted and they put 20 of those shots on cage. Westminster held a 36-20 edge in ground balls and was 14-of-20 in clear attempts. They committed 24 turnovers and lost the draw control battle, 14-11.

HerrNeckar scored four goals to lead the Griffins. She took six shots, with five on cage, and scored once on a free-position shot. Farrell had three goals and two assists to lead all Griffins with five points. Barraco finished with four points behind three goals and one assist.  Lilly Sybrant, Danielle Hillas and Alexa Ferdig had five ground balls apiece with Kaely Kernan recording three draw controls.

Eickoff finished with four goals and one assist for CMU. She put all seven of her shots on goal while also taking a team-high four draw controls. Wells made eight saves in cage to earn the win.

The Griffins will return to action on Friday when they play host to Utah Valley. The game is slated to start at 4 p.m. on Dumke Field.
