Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women's volleyball team used a season-high 75 kills to take a five-set victory over Carroll (Mont.) in a Frontier Conference match on Saturday afternoon in the Behnken Field House.
Westminster moved into fourth place in the Frontier Conference standings with the 18-25, 33-31, 21-25, 25-17, 15-11 win. They are now 13-12 overall this season and 7-5 in the Frontier. The Griffins remain two games behind Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) for third place and are one-half game in front of Montana Tech who plays this evening at Montana State-Northern.
Once again the Griffins got off to a slow start as they dropped the opening set. Westminster had a 13-9 advantage in kills during the set, but they had 11 hitting errors and five serving errors to help Carroll (13-17, 5-7).
Alyse Horton hit .308 in the set with four kills to lead the Griffins.
Carroll was on the verge of a 2-0 lead as they held a 24-20 lead in the second set. Westminster responded with five straight points to take the lead before eventually winning the set 33-31. Carroll served for the set on five occasions while Westminster had four chances to win. The entire set featured 18 ties and eight lead changes.
Jovana Sisovic led Westminster with seven kills in the frame with Horton adding five and
Kyndall Kordakis picking up 14 digs.
The third set saw Carroll hit .308 with 17 kills to take the win. Westminster had 15 kills with four apiece from
Alexis Aalona and
Alyse Horton. The Griffins had 3.5 blocks in the set, but couldn't overcome seven hitting errors.
It would be Westminster that dominated the fourth set as the Griffins racked up 16 kills to hit .271. They added two service aces and two blocks and held Carroll to .089 hitting in the session. Aalona posted six kills in the set and hit .455 on 11 swings. Kordakis added another nine digs with
Cassandra Fenton recording seven.
During the first 15 points of the third there were five ties and four lead changes. Then trailing 8-7, the Griffins scored four straight points to take the lead for good. Aalona tallied all six of her kills in the set for the final six points of the game as she hit .556 in the frame.
Aalona finished the match with 22 kills and hitting .255. This is the sixth time this season the junior had surpassed to 15-kills mark and the third time she has reached 20 kills in a match. She also notched 16 digs for her 11th double-double of the season and fifth in the past six matches.
Horton also hit .255 on the afternoon with a career-high 16 kills. The sophomore also had nine digs and four blocks in the match. Sisovic had a career-high 17 kills for her second straight match in double figures. She also notched three blocks.
Emily Atkinson dished out 44 assists with 16 digs for her sixth double-double this season. Kordakis finished with a season-high 35 digs and
Mayra Ramirez had six blocks.
Westminster's 75 kills are the fifth-most in a match in school history. They also attacked the ball 233 times for the second-highest total by a Westminster team. The Griffins had 11.5 blocks in the match and 94 digs to hold Carroll to .159 hitting and 56 kills.
Kathleen Mulligan led Carroll with 12 kills while Elli Graff added nine. The Saints had six players in double figures in digs as the team combined for 107 in the five sets.
The Griffins will look to continue this two-match winning streak on Thursday when they welcome Great Falls (Mont.) to the Behnken Field House. The Halloween match will begin at 7 p.m. MDT.
