Women Remain Perfect in Frontier with 90-50 Win Over Dickinson State

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The fifth-ranked Westminster College women's basketball remained perfect in Frontier Conference play with a 90-50 win over Frontier Conference newcomer Dickinson State (N.D.) on Thursday evening in the Behnken Field House.

Westminster improves to 17-2 overall on the season with their ninth consecutive win. They are 6-0 in league play and tied atop the standings with Carroll (Mont.). Dickinson State falls to 5-14 and 0-5 with the loss.

After DSU scored the game's opening bucket, Westminster put together a 19-5 run to lead 19-7 with 13:34 remaining in the opening half. Kelsi Wells scored eight of the 19 points during the run and had six straight at one point. They would then use a 19-2 run over a five minute span later in the half to take a 43-18 advantage and carry that into a 48-24 lead at halftime.

When the Blue Hawks managed a 16-9 stretch early in the second half they were down 59-40 with 13:10 remaining in the contest. The Griffins would respond by scoring 26 of the game's next 35 points to reach the largest lead of the game at 88-46 with 1:37 remaining. Five different Griffins would make a three during the run as they finished the game by tying a season high with 10 treys.

The 90 points scored by Westminster is a season-high and is the second-most the team has scored in the last two seasons. They also shot a season-best 54 percent from the field and made 37 percent from beyond the arc. The Griffins spread the ball around with 28 assists on the 34 made field goals and they committed just six turnovers. They would force 20 DSU turnovers and turn them into 30 points.

Wells led four players in double figures by matching her career high of 22 points. She only missed one of her nine shots and was perfect in four free throw attempts and grabbed five rebounds and two assists. Nicole Yazzie finished with 16 points and seven assists while shooting 7-of-11 from the floor. Cydney Tibbitts had 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists and Brooke Larsen had 11 points and six rebounds.

Mariah Duran and Jess Bygate led the Blue Hawks with 12 points apiece while Janae Moore added 11.

Westminster returns to action on Saturday when they welcome Carroll to the Behnken Field House for a first-place showdown. The action will tip at 5:30 p.m. and be carried live on Griffins TV.
