Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The top-ranked Westminster College women's lacrosse team remained perfect in Rocky Mountain Women's Lacrosse League action with a 20-12 win No. 2 Utah on Tuesday evening at Dumke Field.
Westminster improves to 13-5 overall and 3-0 in the RMWLL league win with the victory. Westminster is expected to drop from the No. 1 ranking for the first time in two seasons when the new poll is released on Wednesday. They are now 2-2 against ranked teams this season. Utah falls to 16-5 overall and 2-1 in league.
Utah jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with goals from Cody Rennert and Tracy Souvall just 4:21 into the game. The Griffins responded with goals from
Maggie HerrNeckar and
Chelsea Farrell to draw even at 2-2 with 24:28 remaining in the first half. After the Utes took a 3-2 lead, Westminster scored five straight to open up a 7-3 lead. Farrell scored the first four of that stretch.
Utah would score the next four goals and with 5:30 remaining in the half the game was level at 7-7.
Erin Foslid would score twice with
Shauntel Hyde adding a goal before halftime to give the Griffins a 10-7 lead at the intermission.
The second half began with the Griffins score the first seven goals over a 7:26 stretch. That stretch of goals saw HerrNeckar and
Sage Johnson strike for two apiece. Utah would tally the next two scores of the contest to get within 17-9 with 17:27 to play only to see Westminster score the next two to seal any comeback thoughts.
Westminster outshot the Utes 37-25 and had a 20-12 advantage in draw controls. The Griffins also scored six goals on four man-up chances. Utah held a 27-26 edge in ground balls and was a perfect 4-of-4 on free-position shots.
Farrell finished with a game-high nine points after scoring six goals and adding three assists. She fired nine shots in the game and had seven on frame with six ground balls and two draw controls. HerrNeckar added five goals on nine shots while Johnson had two goals and two assists. Foslid and
Dechie Sumampong scored two goals apiece.
Makenzie Hekking earned the win making six saves in the Griffin cage.
Rennert led Utah with four goals on seven shots. Taylor Dunn scored twice and Traci Shurtleff led the Utes with five ground balls.
Westminster is back in action on Friday when they host Utah State at Dumke Field. The game is Senior Day for the Griffins and it will begin at 6 p.m.
