BYU Snaps Griffins Winning Streak

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women's lacrosse team had its season-opening six-game winning streak snapped with a 17-5 loss against Brigham Young at Dumke Field on Friday.

Westminster, the top-ranked team in WCLA DII, is now 6-1 on the season while also falling to 1-1 at home. BYU, the No. 8 team in WCLA DI, is now 7-2 overall with the win.

BYU scored the first five goals of the game to lead 5-0 at the 21:13 mark of the first half. Chelsea Farrell got the Griffins on the board with 19:30 to play in the half. After the Cougars built the advantage to 9-1, Kaicee Beal struck for Westminster with her first goal of the afternoon. BYU would lead 12-2 at halftime and eventually pushed the advantage to 13-2 at the 28 minute mark of the second half.

Farrell led the Griffins with four points behind her three goals and one assist. Farrell scored her goals on three shots while also picking up a team-high six ground balls. Beal added two goals and one assist for three points. She attempted a team-high seven shots and put five on cage. Makenzie Hekking made seven stops in goal for Westminster.

Brooke Smith led BYU with a five goals and three assist evening. She also grabbed three ground balls and four draw controls. Kristin Lund scored four goals with Jordan Haws adding three.

Westminster will return to action on March 20 when they host Utah Valley at 5 p.m. on Dumke Field.
