Griffins Draw Belhaven in First Round of NAIA National Championship

SALT LAKE CITY – The 15th-ranked Westminster College women's basketball team earned a No. 4 seed and will play fifth-seeded Belhaven (Miss.) in the first round of the 32nd Annual Division I Women's Basketball National Championship presented by Kentuckytourism.com. The 32-team, single elimination tournament will take place from March 14 – 20 inside the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Ky.

Westminster is 22-8 on the season and is making a sixth straight appearance in the national tournament. They qualified for this year's event as the No. 6 at-large team after winning the Frontier Conference regular season title. Belhaven is 26-6 this season and made the field as winners of the Southern States Athletic Tournament. This is the second trip all-time by the Blazers with the first coming in 2011.

The first round game will be played on Wednesday at 11:45 a.m. (MST) as the fourth game of the day. It will mark the first-ever meeting between the two teams. The winner will advance to a second round game on Friday at 8:45 a.m. against the winner of No. 1 Oklahoma City and Our Lady of the Lakes (Texas).

Belhaven is led by NAIA scoring leader Regena Jackson and her 24.3 points per game average. Jackson has reached double figures in scoring in all 30 games she has played this season and 21 times went above 20 points. She twice in a game scored 42 points and also had 39 points in another.

The Blazers enter the national tournament as winners of six straight and 14 of their last 15 games overall. They went 16-2 during league play to place second behind regular season champion, Lee. They average 71.4 points per game while holding the opposition to 59.6.
