Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The No.1-ranked Westminster College women's lacrosse team posted a record performance in a 21-3 win over Utah Valley on Tuesday evening at Dumke Field.
Westminster is now 7-1 overall this season and a perfect 2-0 in Rocky Mountain Women's Lacrosse League games. Utah Valley drops to 1-5 and 0-2.
The Griffins set a new school record for goals in a game with the 21 on Tuesday. The 18 goal margin of victory also matched a school-best set against Weber State earlier this season.
Sage Johnson set a new individual record for points in a game with the 10 she scored against UVU. Johnson finished the game with five goals and five assists to surpass the record of nine points set by
Kaicee Beal in a game last season. Beal had eight points on Tuesday and her seven goals are one shy of the school record of eight she set last year.
Westminster outshot the Wolverines 36-7 in the game and held a 30-18 advantage in ground balls. The Griffins scored the first 10 goals of the night, including Beal's strike just 44 seconds into the game to start the scoring. After a Johnson strike,
Chelsea Farrell scored back-to-back goals to allow the Griffins to open up a 4-0 advantage at the 24:18 mark of the first half.
Maggie HerrNeckar scored three goals for the Griffins. Farrell,
Erin Foslid and
Shauntel Hyde finished with two goals apiece.
Kaely Kernan picked up a team-best four ground balls with
Lilly Sybrant and
McKenzie Deutschendorf collecting three draw controls each.
Makenzie Hekking earned the win while making three saves in goal.
Lindsay Gomm scored all three goals for UVU. Christy Jones and Niki Ballou had three ground balls apiece and Ballou also had four draw controls.
Next up for Westminster is the 2012 Salt Lake Classic this Saturday and Sunday. The Griffins open at 9 a.m. on Saturday against Wyoming. A total of seven games will be played at Dumke Field over the two days with Westminster playing four of them.
