Box Score HELENA, Mont. – The 19th-ranked Westminster College women's basketball team defeated Carroll College, 70-47, on Saturday night in Frontier Conference action.
With its sixth consecutive victory, Westminster is now 17-7 overall this season and they sit atop the Frontier Conference standings with a 10-1 record. The Griffins also clinched a home game during the opening round of next month's conference tournament. Carroll falls to 10-13 overall and 3-7 in league.
It was again the Westminster defense that carried them for much of the evening. They limited Carroll to just 40% shooting while forcing the Saints into 23 turnovers. Carroll entered the game averaging 59.8 points per game and was held below 50 points in a game for just the fourth time this season.
The Griffins also had things clicking offensively on Saturday. They shot 51.2% from the floor in the game, including a blistering 62.5% in the opening half. The 51.2% is the second-best shooting night this season and the highest in conference games. Westminster was also on fire from beyond the arc as they went 11-of-21 from long range. The 52.4% from deep is easily the highest this season while the 11 makes is tied for second-most in a game this year.
Jenteal Jackson finished the night with 20 points, falling just one point shy of her career high. Jackson shot 7-of-9 from the field while also connecting on four of her six attempts from beyond the arc. She also finished with a season-high seven assists with three rebounds and one blocked shot.
Nicole Yazzie made three triples on her way to 11 points.
Shelby Ellsworth and
Allie Eastman each scored 11 points coming off the bench. The Westminster bench finished with a 25-13 scoring advantage.
Torrie Cahill led Carroll with 13 points and Jill Jagelski added 11. Carroll held a 24-15 rebounding advantage and grabbed 10 rebounds on the offensive end.
Westminster will now return home for the final three games of the regular season. That stretch begins on February 18 when they host No. 8 Lewis-Clark State College at 5:30 p.m. in the Behnken Field House. The Griffins hold a one-game lead over LCSC for first in the conference with the winner taking control of the race to the conference title.
