SALT LAKE CITY – The 2011 RMWLL champion Westminster women's lacrosse team suffered a 16-10 loss to Mesa State on Thursday evening on Dumke Field. This non-league game for Westminster comes against a NCAA DII foe.
With the loss, Westminster slips to 16-5 on the year with all five losses coming against teams from outside the WCLA DII. Mesa State improves to 3-8 with the victory.
Mesa State took an early 1-0 lead when Taylor Lansdown found the back of the cage just 13 seconds into the contest. The Griffins responded with three straight goals in the next four minutes.
Dechie Sumampong tallied the first two Griffin goals with
Chelsea Farrell adding the third. Farrell would score two more goals after two Mesa goals and with 20:48 to play in the first half the Griffins held a 5-3 advantage.
Mesa would then score nine of the next 10 goals in the game to take a 12-6 lead with 20:20 remaining in the contest.
Sage Johnson would strike between two Sumampong goals to give Westminster life and cut the deficit to 12-9 with 11:21 to play. Mesa ended any comeback hopes by the Griffins with four straight goals in a five minute span to seal the victory.
Westminster fired 33 shots in the contest and put 24 of them on cage. They also collected 35 ground balls to just 23 by Mesa. Draw controls were even at 14-14.
Farrell finished the game with five goals on a team-best nine shots. Sumampong had four goals with Johnson adding one assist to her goal.
Lindsey Mark posted two assists and
Kaely Kernan added one assist.
Regan Lelli made 15 saves and collected six ground balls in the Griffin cage.
Alexis Rawlings scored six goals for Mesa State while attempting 10 shots. Amanda Simon added four scores and Lansdown scored three. Lauren Wells made 14 saves.
Westminster will now get ready for the WCLA National Championships. The Griffins are the top seed at the tournament and opened against eighth-seeded Oakland on Thursday, May 5 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
