Winning Streak Snapped at Eight

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's lacrosse team had its season-opening eight-game winning streak snapped with a 19-7 loss to Brigham Young on Friday evening at Dumke Field.

Westminster is ranked No. 1 in the WDIA Division 2 poll that was released earlier this week and they fall to 8-1 on the year with the loss. BYU is a WDIA Division1 team that improves to 4-2 with the win.

Westminster scored the first goal of the game on a free position shot from Sage Johnson. After BYU scored the next two goals, Chelsea Farrell scored foe thr Griffins to even the score at 2-2 with 21:52 remaining in the half. The visiting Cougars took control for there, scoring 10 of the next 11 goals to build a 12-3 lead with 22:55 to play. Lisa Webber and Dechie Sumampong scored back-to-back goals for Westminster with Johnson and Kaely Kernan adding goals down the stretch.

BYU outshot the Griffins 31-18 and won 20 draw controls to just eight by Westminster. The Griffins collected 28 ground balls and went 3-of-3 on free position shots. They also made seven saves.

Farrell and Johnson finished with two goals apiece with each taking four shots. Webber also attempted four shots and put them all on frame. Erin Foslid gathered a team-high five ground balls and Kernan had two draw controls. Regan Lelli made six saves during her 54 minutes before giving way to Jasmin Alves. Alves recorded one save in her six minutes.

Melissa Nash and Brooke Smith each had five goals and one assist for BYU. Kristin Viehweg added two goals and three assists. Gretchen Schwartz made six saves between the pipes.

Westminster will look to rebound when they travel to the Lonestar Showdown on Austin, Texas. They open against Arizona on April 1.
