Women’s Basketball Plays LCSC in NAIA Game of the Week

SALT LAKE CITY – The ninth-ranked Westminster women's basketball team travel to Lewiston, Idaho for a game with 11th-ranked Lewis-Clark State College on Saturday. The game has been tabbed as the NAIA Game of the Week by the national office.

Westminster heads north after having its nine-game winning streak snapped last Saturday against Carroll. The Griffins are 22-5 n the season and tied with LCSC for first place in the Frontier Conference with a 9-2 record. The winner of this game will hold a one-game lead for the top seed in the tournament with two road games remaining. Westminster won the season's previous meeting 88-59 on January 22 in Salt Lake City.

Westminster leads the conference in scoring at 77 points per game while shooting 45.1% form the field. The team is ranks second nationally by shooting 77.4% at the foul line and 12th nationally by shooting 35.9% from 3-point range. Defensively they hold the opposition to 65.9 points per game and 39.2% shooting.

About the Warriors
Lewis-Clark State enters the game with a 23-3 overall record and a No. 11 national ranking. The Warriors have won six straight since the January loss to the Griffins. LCSC leads the Frontier by giving up just 59.3 points per game and holding the opposition to 33% shooting from the field. Jamsine Stohr leads the Frontier in scoring at 18.8 points per game and steals at 2.77 per night. She also averages four assists per night to rank second in the conference.

Saturday's game will be broadcast on the Victory Sports Network as the VSN Game of the Week. VSN broadcast select games every week and is the exclusive network for national NAIA broadcasts. VSN will feature both the women's and men's Griffins/Warriors games on Saturday. The games will be available at www.livestream.com/victorysports.

Conference Tournament
The 2011 Frontier Conference Tournament will be held on March 1-7 with the highest seeds hosting home games. The quarterfinal round is slated for Tuesday, March 1 with the top four seeds playing at home. The two highest remaining seeds will host a semi-final game on Friday, March 4. The highest remaining seed will host the championship game on Monday, March 7. All games will begin at 7 p.m. Westminster has secured a home game against a yet to be determined opponent during the quarterfinals on March 1.

Chasing 1,000
Senior Dani Evans is on a quest to become the fifth player in school history to score 1,000 career points. Evans enters the week with 974 career points and needs to average 6.5 points per game over the remaining scheduled games to reach 1,000. Evans has never missed a game in her Griffin career and if that continues she will finish her career having played in more games than any other Griffin.

Open for Three
The Griffins are once again among the top 3-point shooting team in the nation. The team averages 8.33 makes from beyond the arc per game to rank first in the Frontier and fifth in the NAIA. Westminster also shoots 35.9% from long range to lead the conference and rank 12th nationally. Dani Evans makes a conference-best 42.1% of her attempts from beyond the arc while making 1.78 per game. Nicole Yazzie averages 2.33 treys per night while shooting 36.8% from distance.

From the Charity Stripe
Westminster is shooting 77.4% from the foul line this season to lead the Frontier Conference. The team is second in the NAIA with that percentage. They have shot above 70% at the stripe in 22 times this season and 1 times have gone above 80%. Westminster has gone 183-of-228 (80.3%) at the line in during conference games. Jenteal Jackson is shooting 80.6% at the stripe which ranks 25th nationally and third in the conference. Angela Fales is shooting 94.3% at the line and has made 10 straight.

Home Cooking
Over the past three seasons, Westminster has gone 38-7 at home including a 19-2 mark in Frontier Conference action. They started the year with seven straight home wins before suffering an 88-76 loss to Montana Tech on January 6. The Griffins have won 24 of the last 27 games played in the Behnken Field House and this is the first time since 2008 they have lost two conference home games.

Streaking in the Poll
With a No. 9 ranking in the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll that was released on February 14, Westminster has now been ranked inside the top 25 for 19 consecutive polls. Last week's No. 8 ranking is the highest ranking in school history. They have also been ranked in the top 25 in 44 of the last 45 polls and received votes in the poll they weren't ranked. The Griffins started this season at No. 10 and have been as low as No. 15.

Massey Ratings
Westminster carries a No. 15 ranking in the Massey Ratings that were released on February 16. They dropped four spots from the rating that was released on February 7. The Griffins have a rating of 0.817 and are the second highest rated team from the Frontier Conference. Lewis-Clark State is rated sixth and the Frontier is rated as the second highest conference.

Next Week
Westminster will conclude the 2011 regular season with two games in Montana. The Griffins face Montana State-Northern on February 25 and Great Falls on February 26.
