Michael Stockton didn't disappoint the record crowd that was in attendance for his final regular season home game. The senior from Spokane, Wash. Carried Westminster to a 91-76 win over Carroll College on Saturday night in the Behnken Field House.
Westminster improves to 19-6 on the season and 7-4 in the Frontier Conference with the win. Carroll slips to 16-7 and 6-4 in defeat.
“I was real happy for Michael tonight,” head coach Tommy Connor said. “That start he had was incredible and set the tone for the whole night.”
Stockton scored 10 of the Griffins first 17 points and helped them run out to a 19-5 lead less than six minutes into the game. The lead would reach 16 after two Stockton free throws at the 8:52 mark of the first half. Carroll would rally back and three times get within seven before a 9-2 run capped by a Stockton jumper gave Westminster a 49-35 halftime advantage.
Carroll would again get within seven at the 14:41 mark of the second half. The Griffins then used a 14-4 run again capped by a Stockton bucket to open up a 17 point cushion. Carroll would get as close as nine down the stretch, but Westminster made 8-of-9 free throws down the stretch to claim the win.
Westminster shot 60.9% from the floor in the game and scored 48 points in the paint. They recorded 14 assists on 28 field goals and pushed the tempo to the tune of 12 fast break points. The Griffins dominated the glass, grabbing 27 rebounds to just 18 by Carroll.
Stockton finished the night with 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting. He made five of his six free throw attempts while grabbing three rebounds and posting two assists.
Stockton wasn't alone as
Jake Orchard added 21 points and nine rebounds. Orchard shot 8-of-10 from the field with one steal.
Jordan Bjornberg finished with 15 points and
Tanner Gregory scored 14.
Andy Garland led Carroll with 20 points while Tony Dalton had 16 points and five assists. Carroll shot 53.1% from the field with 14 assists and only 11 turnovers.
Westminster now begins a season ending three-game road trip against Lewis-Clark State College on Saturday, February 19. The game from Lewiston, Idaho will begin at 9:00 p.m.
