SALT LAKE CITY – Looking to avoid a three-game losing streak for the first time since November of 2009, the Westminster men's basketball team defeated Rocky Mountain College 91-66 on Thursday night in the Behnken Field House.
Westminster is now 18-6 on the year and 6-3 in the Frontier Conference. The loss drops Rocky to 10-15 and 3-6.
After leading 39-31 at the intermission, Westminster opened the second half with a 33-6 run to put the game out of reach. The Griffins made six of their season high 16 threes during the run. Westminster finished the game shooting 55.2% from beyond the arc.
“We shot the lights out tonight,” head coach Tommy Connor said. “We were really unselfish tonight and guys stepped up and made shots.”
Westminster posted 23 assists on 33 made field goals in the game. The good ball movement led to 55.9% shooting and only 10 turnovers. Defensively they limited Rocky to 49.1% shooting and forced 11 turnovers. The Griffins scored 26 points in the paint and scored 19 points from 15 offensive rebounds. They finished the night with a 35-24 rebounding advantage.
Michael Stockton and
Chris Cassity led the team with 15 points apiece. It was a career high for Cassity who added two assists and one rebounds.
AJ Reilly and
Jake Orchard scored 13 points each. Reilly added five assists and three steals while Orchard grabbed five rebounds. Tannger Gregory had 10 points.
“I thought Cassity was terrific,” Connor said of his reserve guard. “He gave us good energy and when he makes shots we have a great guard line.”
EJ Ross led Rocky with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting. The team had 28 points in the paint and scored 13 points from nine offensive rebounds.
Westminster will ply at home for the final time of the regular season when they host Carroll College on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. It will be the final regular season home game for Stockton. Westminster will also induct Tom Steinke into the Westminster Athletic Hall of Fame at halftime.
