SEASIDE, Calif. – The Westminster College men's basketball team used a balanced offensive attack to lead them to a 72-68 win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday night.
The win improves Westminster to 7-1 on the year and bounce back from their first loss of the season in their last outing. Monterey Bay falls to 0-2 with the loss.
Three players scored in double figures for the Griffins with three others reaching at least eight points.
Jake Orchard led the way with 18 points behind 6-of-10 shooting.
AJ Reilly and
Jordan Hayter scored 10 points apiece with Hayter also adding two assists.
Tanner Gregory and
Ben Walker scored nine points apiece while
Alex Drecksel added eight.
Westminster shot 52.3% from the floor and overcame 1-of-9 from beyond the arc by shooting 78.1% at the foul line. As Monterey Bay tried to rally from an 11-point deficit with 6:30 to play, the Griffins went 8-of-9 at the foul line to keep the Otters from taking the lead.
Derrick Anderson led the Otters with 25 points and nine rebounds. The team shot 44.1% from the field with four makes from beyond the arc and 18 offensive rebounds.
Westminster will now have a day off before facing No. 9 Azusa Pacific on Saturday. That game in Azusa, Calif. will begin at 4 p.m.
