Allie Eastman scored 24 second half points to lead the 11th-ranked Westminster women's basketball team to an 80-71 win over No. 17 Cal Baptist at the GSAC Challenge on Thursday. Eastman finished with a career high 28 points to lead the Griffins (13-3) to a split at the tournament and claim a season sweep of Cal Baptist (10-4).
Trailing 42-35 with 1:56 remaining in the first half, Westminster went on an 11-0 run into the second half to build a 46-42 advantage. The teams would trade baskets for a few minutes before the Griffins went on a 10-3 run to turn a 59-59 tie into a 69-62 lead with 7:09 remaining. CBU would get back to within two before Westminster would make a final push to seal the win.
Eastman had 11 of the first 13 second half points for the Griffins. She made a three on three consecutive Westminster possessions and finished with a career high six triples on nine attempts. The sophomore guard also collected a career-best nine rebounds while shooting 9-of-13 from the field.
The Griffins shot 45.5% from the floor in the game and were 54.5% in the second half in which they outscored the opponent 40-29. They grabbed 39 rebounds and posted 18 assists on 25 made field goals. Defensively they held the Lancers to 38.7% shooting and forced them into 13 turnovers.
Michelle Pace finished with 17 points and five rebounds, scoring on 9-of-10 trips to the foul line.
Nicole Yazzie added 13 points and three assists while fellow guard
Jenteal Jackson had 12 points and nine assists.
Angela Fales and
Brooke Larsen finished with six and four points respectively off the bench.
Dana Olsen led CBU with 25 points and nine rebounds. V.V. Vasciunaite added 19 points in the game after scoring 16 in the first 20 minutes.
The Griffins now wait for the Frontier Conference opener on Thursday, January 6 against Montana Tech in the Behnken Field House.
