No. 10 Griffins win Season Opener

Box Score EL CAJON, California – The 10-ranked women's basketball team defeated San Diego Christian 81-73 on Friday night to begin the 2010-11 season. Westminster (1-0) overcame 29 turnovers by shooting 56.3% from the field and 50% from three-point territory. This is the fourth consecutive win for the Griffins in a season opener.

After trailing by six less than seven minutes into the game, Westminster went on a 17-5 run to build a six point lead with 6:04 remaining in the half. They would push the lead to seven with 2:24 to play before San Diego Christian (0-1) took advantage of three late turnovers to trim the lead to 37-35 at the intermission.

SDC would build a seven point lead with 14:27 to play in the second half before the Griffins used a 10-2 run sparked by two three-pointers from Dani Evans to retake the lead. At one stretch in the second half, Evans scored 14 straight Westminster points and put the Griffins ahead for good.

Westminster finished 27 of 48 from the field and were 15 of 24 (62.5%) in the second half to help them overcome the 29 turnovers. The Griffins controlled the boards to a 39-18 advantage with six offensive. They also posted 20 assists on 27 field goals.

Evans finished with a career high 24 points and four triples. She was 9 of 14 from the field with six rebounds and two assists. Allie Eastman added 17 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Eastman did much of her damage frome thr foul line where she was 10 of 11. Nicole Yazzie chipped in 11 points and five assists.

Brittany Robinson led San Diego Christian with 20 points. Melissa Villalobos added 15 points and six steals for the Hawks. As a team, SDC shot 46% from the field and 62.5% in the second half.

Westminster will return to action on Saturday, October 30 when they face No. 5 Vanguard. That game will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Costa Mesa, California.
