SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's volleyball team gave 11th-ranked Lewis-Clark State a battle on Friday night, but eventually fell 12-25, 25-22, 19-25, 18-25. With a win in the second set, Westminster (8-7, 4-3 Frontier) is the only conference team to take a set from LCSC (16-1, 7-0) this season. The loss snaps a four-match winning streak for the Griffins and drops them to 4-3 in the Behnken Field House.
Westminster started the night slow in an attempt to snap a seven match winning streak by LCSC. The Griffins hit just .061 in the opening set and recorded just nine kills to the 12 posted by the opposition. The Warriors also ripped of three service aces in the opening frame and had a 5-0 advantage in blocks.
The Griffins responded in set two, banging out 17 kills and hitting .229. Clotile Harris sparked the turnaround with seven kills and got help from
Ericka Evans with five kills. Defensively the Griffins were solid in the second with 21 digs, including eight from
Kyndall Kordakis.
The third set featured four ties and two lead changes, but Westminster couldn't overcome -.054 hitting and 13 kills by LCSC. The guests from Idaho also had 21 digs in the third set to stymie to Griffin offensive attack. No Griffin had more than one kill in the third frame.
Set four was full of runs by both teams. After falling behind 5-0, Westminster rallied with a 10-1 run and led 10-6. The Warriors then scored six straight themselves to take the lead for good. Westminster hit even in the set while allowing the Warriors to hit .241.
Westminster struggled all night from the service line and finished with 13 missed serves in the game. They hit just .071 in the match with 41 kills. The Griffins did pick up five service aces and six blocks as a team while they also collected 58 digs.
Evans and Harris finished the night with 10 kills apiece. Evans notched her third double-double of the season with 12 digs. She is now just one kill shy of becoming just the second member of the 700 kills and 700 digs club at Westminster. Stephanie Jones had six kills and three blocks to go with the five kills and three blocks from
Kenzie Mitchell.
Kyndall Kordakis played great on the back line with 18 digs.
Deddiy Alaimaleata led LCSC with 13 kills and a .444 hitting efficiency. She also recorded nine blocks for the Warriors who now sit on top of the Frontier Conference by 2.5 games.
Westminster will return to action on October 7 when they step out of conference action to face Mesa State in Grand Junction, Colorado.
