LAKE WALES, Fla. –
Keshia Catten scored a season high 24 points as the Westminster women's basketball team defeated Union (Ky.) College 74-59 on Wednesday afternoon. No. 19 Westminster (11-4) had three players foul out and overcame 17 turnovers by shooting 50% from the field in the win.
“Coming across the country after the holidays, you never know how the team will respond,” head coach JD Gustin said. “I just can't be more proud of the how they came out and got the win.”
Westminster scored the first eight points of the game and led 13-2 just three minute into the contest. They took control of the game with a 16-3 run over the final 7:36 of the half to turn a 27-21 lead into a 43-24 halftime cushion. The lead reached 24 at the 13:12 mark of the second half. Union (10-5) couldn't get closer than 12 the rest of the game.
“It was good thing we started fast because it was a good basketball team we played today,” Gustin said of Union. “They are well coached and they play hard and we had to find a way to get it done.”
Catten added four rebounds and three steals to her 24 points. She shot 9-of-11 from the field and three times connected from beyond the arc.
Nicole Yazzie added 14 points and two triples.
Dani Evans had 11 points off the bench while
Allie Eastman finished with 10 points.
“It was good to see Keshia play well tonight,” Gustin said of his senior guard. “We are going to need different people to step up every night if we are going to defend our conference championship.”
Brooke Smith led Union with 23 points and Carley Blankenship contributed 11 points. Union shot just 33.3% from the field and went just 2-of-17 from beyond the arc.
Westminster will return to action on Thursday, January 7 when they open Frontier Conference action against Montana State-Northern. That game will tipoff at 5:30 p.m. in the Behnken Field House.
