Westminster Advances to Championship Game

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's basketball team advanced to the Frontier Conference Playoffs championship game with an 88-55 win over Montana Western on Friday night. No. 15 Westminster (26-5) used a 51-28 second half to put away the Bulldogs and make their way to the first championship game in school history. The Griffins put four players in double figures, led by 16 from Dani Evans.

“We were really tight in the first half,” head coach JD Gustin said. “It was nice to see us mellow out in the second half. Give Western a lot of credit, they played their hearts out but our depth kind of wore them out.”

Westminster shot 49.1% in the game and had an assist on 24 of the 26 total field goals. They forced Western into 18 turnovers which resulted in 27 Westminster points. Evans was the leading scorer for the second consecutive game and finished the night with four makes from beyond the arc. Keshia Catten had seven of her 13 points in the opening half including the first four points of the game.

“It was a quick start for us,” Catten commented. “We definitely used it to get us going.”

The two leading scorers for the Griffins were held below 10 points as Elisa Leader and Shannon Evans had nine points apiece. Evans finished with 10 assists and eight rebounds while Leader had five rebounds and two assists. Alexis Tucker and Mara Hoskins scored 13 and 12 respectively.

Jamie Lake led Montana Western (9-21) with 13 points before fouling out. Chloe Mosey had eight points and seven rebounds. Western had a 30-24 advantage in the paint and forced Westminster into 18 turnovers.

Westminster will now face the winner of Lewis-Clark State and Rocky Mountain in the Frontier Conference championship game on Monday, March 9. This is the first trip to the conference title game in the history of the program. “It's really exciting for us to keep doing things that have never been done here at Westminster,” said Gustin. Tipoff at the Behnken Field House is at 7:00 p.m.
