Griffins Claim Frontier Conference Championship

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – For the first time in school history the Westminster women's basketball team are champions of the Frontier Conference. No. 17 Westminster claimed the title behind an 88-58 win against Rocky Mountain College on Thursday night in the Behnken Field House. Westminster (22-5, 12-0 Frontier) shot 47.4% for the game and forced 26 turnovers.

“I couldn't be more proud of the kids,” an emotional head coach JD Gustin said. “We weren't ever sure if this would happen at Westminster, but the kids said it would and then went and made it happen.”

By clinching the regular season title, Westminster will host every game they play during the conference tournament. Shannon Evans led the way with 18 points and eight assists. Evans went 11-of-13 from the foul line, grabbed five rebounds, and recorded one steal.

“That's just Shannon being the All-American she is,” Gustin said of his senior point guard. “I would take her on my team every time and feel good about my chances.”

Evans, Mara Hoskins, and Elisa Leader were all a part of a team that went 0-14 in the conference during their freshman years so this championship has a more meaning to them. Hoskins finished with 12 points and six rebounds while Leader scored 13 points.

“This was the goal from the time we were freshman,” Leader said. “It finally happened and it feels extremely good.”

“We were eight as freshman so this feels real good,” Hoskins, a senior from Billings, Montana, stated. “To win in against the team from my hometown makes it a little more special.”

Westminster held a 15-4 advantage in fast break points while turning the 26 Rocky turnovers into 31 points. The Griffins also had 39-36 rebounding advantage and held Rocky to just 34.4% shooting on the night.

Rocky (13-13, 7-4) was led by 24 points from Julie Rayback. She went 9-of-11 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. Dani Henderson added 14 points while Liz Lewis scored 11.

Westminster concludes the regular season home schedule with a 5:30 p.m. game against Carroll College on Saturday, February 21. The four Westminster seniors will be honored during halftime of the men's game later that night.
