SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's basketball team defeated San Diego Christian 72-54 on Friday night in the Behnken Field House. The win is the fourth consecutive for Westminster (8-4) and the second is as many nights. The Griffins shot 43.4% in the game while holding SDC (2-6) to just 33.3%.

Westminster started quickly, scoring the first 12 points of the game. Freshman Nicole Yazzie scored the first five pints of the game on her way to a game-high 21. She also assisted on two baskets during the opening run. San Diego Christian got it back to a nine-point deficit with 9:30 to play in the first half, but from then on the Griffins held a double-digit advantage. The largest lead was 28 with 8:55 to play in the second half.

“We are trying to get better defensively,” head coach JD Gustin said of his team forcing 20 turnovers. “We are also trying to take care of the basketball and we didn't do a very good job of that tonight.”

Yazzie added four assists, three steals, and four rebounds to her 21 points. Fellow freshman Allie Eastman scored 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Eastman made her first five shots and grabbed five rebounds and two steals. McKenzie Jessop had 10 points and three assists.

“They are special and they are only going to get better,” Gustin said of Yazzie and Eastman. “We are glad to have them.”

Westminster completes this three-game home stand by taking on Northern New Mexico on Saturday, December 5 at 4 p.m. in the Behnken Field House. That game follows a contest between Rocky Mountain College and San Diego Christian.
