Women’s Basketball Begins Year with Road Win

Keshia Catten scored 17 points to lead all Griffins

Keshia Catten had a team-high 17 points against William Jessup on Friday night.
Box Score ROCKLIN, Calif. – The 2009-10 women's basketball season began with Westminster claiming a 94-60 win over host William Jessup on Friday night. Westminster (1-0) used pressure defense and excellent shooting to claim the first win of the season. The Griffins have now won four straight season openers and seven consecutive road games dating back to last season.

William Jessup (0-1) had built a 17-13 advantage halfway through the opening 20 minutes before Westminster went on a 27-4 run to open up a 40-21 lead. Westminster went 7-of-11 from beyond the arc in the first half and carried a 45-33 cushion into the intermission.

The Griffins continued their torrid shooting during the second stanza, connecting on 53.1% of the shot attempts and outscoring the opponent 49-27 in the second half. Westminster went 7-of-18 (38.9%) from distance in the second half.

In the game, Westminster forced William Jessup into 25 turnovers which resulted in 27 points. The Griffins also had a 28-14 advantage in points in the paint and had a 37-17 in bench points. The Griffins grabbed 39 rebounds in the game and turned 11 offensive rebounds in 14 second chance points.

Six players reached double-figures for Westminster, led by 17 from Keshia Catten. Catten finished the night 5-of-9 from the field and was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc with a team and career high six assists. Allie Eastman and Nicole Yazzie each chipped in 13 points in their first collegiate game. Michelle Pace, Dani Evans, and Candace Smith all went for 10 points.

Ashley Rose led William Jessup with 18 points and had five makes from deep. Maria Viola and Aleta Stamps finished with 15 and 13 points respectively.

Westminster continues this road trip on Saturday, October 31, when they visit Bethany (Calif.) for a 2:00 p.m. game.
