SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's volleyball team snapped a five-match losing streak with a 3-0 sweep of Montana Tech on Thursday night. Westminster continued its dominance in the Behnken Field House, improving to 3-0 at home this season and 26-7 all-time. The win also moves the Griffins to 7-15 overall and into fourth place in the Frontier Conference at 4-4.
Westminster won the three sets by scores of: 25-20, 25-15, 25-19.
The first set was a back-and-forth battle that featured five ties and four lead changes. Westminster called a second timeout trailing in the set 20-16. Following that stoppage, Westminster rattled off nine consecutive points to take the set 25-20. The Griffins forced Tech into six hitting errors during the 9-0 run.
Westminster took control of set two early, using a 10-1 run to turn a 6-5 lead into a 16-6 advantage.
Ericka Evans posted three kills and one block during the run. Tech got back to 18-13, but Evans recorded two crucial kills late to seal the set victory.
Montana Tech opened set three with a 6-3 advantage, before allowing the Griffins to draw even at seven. The two teams exchanged points for awhile until Westminster turned a 17-15 lead into the 25-19 victory.
Westminster recorded 34 kills as a team and limited Tech to just 22. The Griffin defense recorded 44 digs and held the opponent to a .011 hitting efficiency, the second lowest by an opponent this season. Westminster also posted seven service aces.
Evans led the Griffins with 11 kills in the match, her 10th double-digit kill night of the season.
Talita Kresser chipped in seven kills and
Katy Waldie went for five kills in limited action off the bench. Kresser also had a team and season high four service aces.
Jessica Schmidt recorded her first Westminster double-double with 13 assists and 12 digs.
Tahnie Blymiller had 15 digs at libero.
Lacey Phelan led Tech with nine kills and hit .172 in the match. As a team, Tech held an 8-3 advantage in total blocks.
Westminster is back in action on Saturday, October 17 when they host Montana Western in the Behnken Field House at 2:00 p.m.
