Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – Five players reached double figures as 16th-ranked Westminster defeated 13th-ranked Cal Baptist 101-90 on Friday night. Westminster's balanced attack was enough to hold off the Lancers' and their scoring machine, Nicole Davis. Westminster improves to 7-0 on the year, including 3-0 at home, while Cal Baptist falls to 1-2.
Westminster started strong for the second straight night, jumping out to a 20-9 lead in the first six minutes of the game. That stretch was sparked by four consecutive 3-pointers, two each by
Elisa Leader and
Keshia Catten. The first half lead eventually reached 20 when Jessica Huebner hit a 5-footer at the 2:24 mark, before finishing the opening stanza with a 52-36 lead.
Cal Baptist continued to fight all second half behind the incredible shooting of Davis. She tied a school record with eight 3-pointers and finished the night with 37 points and five assists. The Lancers got as close as nine late in the game, but key free throws from
Michelle Pace and the early lead was enough for the Griffins.
Leader led the Griffins with 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting, her second consecutive 20-point contest. Pace finished the night with 16 points and 10 rebounds, her first double-double of the season. Catten scored 20 points and snared six steals while
Shannon Evans scored 12 points with nine assists and zero turnovers.
Westminster forced Cal Baptist into 24 turnovers and turned them into 26 points. The Griffins also held a 42-30 advantage in the paint and the bench put up 19 points to 16 by the Lancers.
Suzanne Young scored 10 points off that Griffin bench.
Brenna Hahn scored 14 and Bryana Williams had 11 points and 11 rebounds for Cal Baptist. The Lancers outrebounded Westminster 37-33 and shot 52.6 percent from the floor. They were 10-of-21 from 3-point range with Davis connecting on 8-of-12.
Next for Westminster is a 4:00 p.m. game on Saturday, November 15 against Northern New Mexico. It will be the third time the two squads have met this season with Westminster holding a 2-0 advantage.
