Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – Saturday night was the home opener for the Westminster Griffins, and they put on a show. Playing against a College of Idaho team that likes to play pressure defense and high tempo, Westminster took the challenge and cruised to a 109-84 win. The 109 points scored sets a new school record, erasing the old record of 103 set in 2002. Westminster now sits at 3-0 for a second consecutive year while the College of Idaho falls to 0-1
Westminster countered the College of Idaho attack with one of their own, forcing the Yotes in 28 turnovers. Westminster took advantage of these opportunities by turning them into 39 points. Westminster also shot the ball well, connecting on 51.9 percent of their field goal attempts, including 56.8 percent in the first half. The Griffins also went 13-of-24 from long range.
“We made some shots tonight,” head coach JD Gustin commented after the game. “Anytime you shoot 50 percent from 3-point range you are going to have a chance. I think we can play better, but they are a solid team and forced us into some tough situations.”
Westminster took control of the game early, never trailing in the contest. They had opened up a 35-15 lead with 10:15 to play in the opening stanza, but the College of Idaho fought their way back in the game and with 1:43 left in the first half it was down to 47-38. That would be as close as they would get however, as Westminster went on a 16-5 run over the next five minutes to put the game away. Westminster would build the lead to 33 with four minutes left and coast from there for the win.
Keshia Catten led all scorers with a career high 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting. She also connected on 7-of-12 from 3-point range while pulling down six rebounds. Her three with 4:32 to play gave the Griffins 105 points and set the school record for points in a game.
Elisa Leader also scored a career high with her 27 points. She was 11-of-16 from the field and grabbed seven boards and dished out three assists.
Alexis Tucker contributed 20 points and seven rebounds as well.
