Prokopis played basketball for Westminster College from 1951 to 1955. When he was a senior at Cyprus High School he was offered a half tuition scholarship to play at Westminster. Prokopis only missed one game in his four years playing at the college, and started in every game he appeared in. He was an all-conference player for four straight years, with three years as captain. In 1955, Prokopis received a certificate from Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges, and appeared in the 1954-1955 edition. The same year he received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Westminster College, and was honored by the college with the Niesen R. Bank Award for combined academic performance, citizenship, athletics and extra-curricular involvement. In addition to his involvement with athletics, Prokopis served as vice president of his freshman class and president of his junior class at Westminster.

After graduation, he worked as a production manager at Packaging Corporation of America (formerly Tenneco Inc.) for 41 years until his retirement in 1997. He and Marie, his wife of over 50 years, have three grown children and seven grandchildren.  

John passed away on Sunday, August 15th, 2021 at the age of 88. He was so proud of his 3 perfect children: Trish (Steve) More, Tedd (Joni) Prokopis , and Brooke Dyer. Adding to his lineage came 7 grandchildren, Madison, Camryn, and Hannah More; John and Taylor Prokopis; Ethan and Nicholas Dyer. Preceded in death by his precious Trish and brother Billy.
