Griffins Battle Unbeaten CSU Pueblo Down to the Wire in Conference Opener

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Westminster men's soccer team opened RMAC conference play with a hard-fought 2-1 battle against previously unbeaten CSU Pueblo on Thursday evening at Dumke Field, 

Game Breakdown

First Half

CSU Pueblo, riding a 7-0-0 start to the season, controlled the opening stretch and broke through in the 27th minute when Nick Cenek scored off an assist from Joao Lutz to put the ThunderWolves up 1-0. Westminster answered almost immediately — just over a minute later, Kasen Smith buried his first goal of the season off a feed from Gage Wood in the 28th minute, leveling the match at 1-1. The response showed the fight in this Griffins squad, matching the unbeaten ThunderWolves punch for punch. CSU Pueblo carried a slim 3-1 shot edge into the break, but the game was tied heading to the second half.

Second Half

Westminster came out with more purpose after the restart, out-shooting CSU Pueblo 4-2 over the final 45 minutes. The ThunderWolves regained the lead in the 51st minute when Joao Lutz converted a penalty kick to make it 2-1. But the Griffins kept pushing — Gage Wood had a shot blocked in the 61st minute, Ethan Ross forced a save from CSU Pueblo goalkeeper Esteban Gonzalez in the 62nd minute, and Owen Gallo had a chance blocked in the 66th minute. Kasen Smith nearly delivered again in the 73rd minute, drawing another save from Gonzalez as Westminster continued to generate pressure and corner kick opportunities late in the match. Despite the effort, the Griffins couldn't find the equalizer, and CSU Pueblo held on for the 2-1 win.
