Griffins Battle No. 2 UCCS to 1-1 Draw, Gallo Delivers Standout Performance

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Westminster men's soccer team fought to a hard-earned 1-1 draw with No. 2 UCCS on Sunday at Dumke Field, with Owen Gallo delivering one of the standout performances of the season and the Griffins finishing with a commanding 18-14 shot advantage over the nation's second-ranked team.

Game Breakdown

First Half

UCCS struck first in the seventh minute when Dalton Uehling scored off an assist from Eduardo Macias, giving the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead. But Westminster answered before halftime, as Owen Gallo — who had already tested UCCS goalkeeper Hugo Sjoberg twice earlier in the half with saved shots in the 5th and 16th minutes — finally broke through in the 27th minute, finishing off an assist from Stellan Blomberg to level the match at 1-1. Parker Stebbing also had a shot saved late in the half as Westminster pushed for a second before the break. Shots were close through the opening 45 minutes, with UCCS holding an 8-7 edge, but the Griffins carried real momentum into the locker room after erasing the early deficit against a top-two team.

Second Half

Westminster took control after the restart, out-shooting UCCS 11-6 over the final 45 minutes in a relentless push for the go-ahead goal. Gallo continued to be the driving force, firing shot after shot at Sjoberg — narrowly missing wide in the 64th and 66th minutes before forcing three more saves in the 75th, 82nd, and 90th minutes. Kasen Smith and Spencer Lords also tested Sjoberg with shots on target, and Khristian Bombeck had a late attempt blocked as the Griffins continued to generate pressure in the closing minutes. Despite the onslaught, Sjoberg held firm, and the match finished level at 1-1.

Griffin Performances

  • Owen Gallo turned in a standout eight-shot performance, six on target, scoring the equalizer and testing Sjoberg all match long

  • Stellan Blomberg recorded the assist on Gallo's goal and added two shots of his own

  • Kasen Smith and Spencer Lords each registered a shot on goal in the second half

  • Oliver Olsen made four saves to help anchor the Griffins defense
