Griffins Hold Off Regis in Second Straight Home Win, 12-11


Westminster secured its second consecutive one-goal victory on Sunday, surviving a late Regis charge to win 12-11 at home in Salt Lake City. The Griffins improved to 3-2 on the season and 2-0 in RMAC play.


Game Breakdown

First Quarter

Westminster came out hot, scoring four unanswered goals to open the game. Shaina Shoughro got things started at 13:25 assisted by Holly Shoughro, followed quickly by Jessie Giacomazzi assisted by Lilliana Montano, Ava Deakins assisted by Holly Shoughro, and Giacomazzi again unassisted to put the Griffins up 4-0. Regis responded with goals from Lexie Springman on a free-position shot and Krista Munsinger on a man-up free-position to cut the deficit to 4-2, before Holly Shoughro closed the quarter with an unassisted goal to send Westminster into the second leading 5-2. Westminster put up 6 shots on goal in the period with Sienna Garcia making 1 save in goal.

Second Quarter

The second quarter belonged to Regis. Maggie Schipfer went on a tear, scoring four goals in the period as the Rangers rattled off six straight to flip the score to 8-5. Westminster answered with an Ava Deakins unassisted goal, but Regis pushed back to 8-6 on a Rome Villani free-position goal. The Griffins refused to fold, closing the half on back-to-back goals from Shaina Shoughro — assisted by Deakins — and Olivia Petrosky — assisted by Giacomazzi — to tie the game at 8-8 heading into halftime. Kaelyn Hart took over in goal to start the second quarter, making 3 saves while allowing 6 goals.

Third Quarter

Regis struck first in the third with Schipfer's fifth goal of the game at 8:39 to retake the lead 9-8. Westminster responded with three straight — Shaina Shoughro assisted by Jadyn Kohan, Giacomazzi unassisted, and Ava Deakins assisted by Holly Shoughro — to go up 11-9. Kaitlyn Parish took over in goal to open the third quarter, making 2 saves and holding Regis to just 1 goal in the period. Westminster outshot Regis 9-3 in the quarter.

Fourth Quarter

Regis came out aggressive in the fourth, with Schipfer scoring at 12:42 assisted by Krista Munsinger to cut it to 11-10. Westminster answered with Deakins' fourth goal of the game — a free-position strike at 6:53 — to push the lead back to 12-10. Schipfer pulled Regis within one at 3:58 to make it 12-11, and the Rangers had several late opportunities but could not find the equalizer. Westminster held on for the 12-11 victory. Kaitlyn Parish made 2 saves in the fourth to help seal the win.
