Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Griffins End Home Opener In Draw

Salt Lake City, UT – The Westminster Griffins Men's Soccer team opened their 2024 home season at Dumke Field with a 1-1 draw against California State University Monterey Bay on Thursday night. In an intense second half, both teams found the back of the net once, resulting in a hard-fought tie.

Jack Cardwell opened the scoring for the Griffins with his second goal of the season. Taking advantage of an unlucky bounce for Cal State Monterey Bay, Cardwell capitalized on the opportunity to fire one past the goalkeeper, giving Westminster a 1-0 lead.

However, the Griffins found themselves a man down due to a red card earlier in the match, and in the 72nd minute, Cal State Monterey Bay responded. Mason Ward, assisted by Kane Ritchie, leveled the score at 1-1.

Both teams had chances to take the lead late in the match, but solid goalkeeping kept the score level. Westminster's Roark Looney made four key saves, including two back-to-back stops in a crucial first-half sequence. Jerry Godfryd, the goalkeeper for Cal State Monterey Bay, also came up with critical saves throughout the night to hold Westminster to just one goal.

The action continues on Dumke Field this Saturday, as Cal State Monterey Bay faces Colorado Mesa University at 12 PM, followed by Westminster taking on Northwest Nazarene University at 2:30 PM. Both matches will be broadcast live on the RMAC Network.
