Colorado Springs, Colo. - The Westminster University's Women's Soccer team defied expectations in the RMAC Tournament, entering as the 8th seed but proving they were a force to be reckoned with. In an intense match, in the second overtime period,
Emma Geiges lined up for a free kick just outside the box. Her strike soared high into the back of the net, breaking the deadlock and putting the Griffins ahead 1-0. The crowd erupted in celebration as the underdog team displayed their determination and skill.
But the drama wasn't over yet. A critical foul by Alex Hoffman awarded the Mountain Lions a golden opportunity to level the score. Positioned just outside the box, they prepared for a pivotal penalty kick which was saved by Mashaun Estridge and helped the Griffins win 1-0 on the road in the first round of the tournament.
"The biggest key to our success today was the workfare and defensive shifting. We've stressed that all week and the players executed it all game. But the reality, is I think we were just sick of dropping games," said Head Coach Tony LeBlanc. "We have played tough all year but the goals just weren't coming like usual. Today was a bit of vindication for our year and the players did outstanding all game."
Estridge's performance was nothing short of exceptional, as she made nine crucial saves throughout the game. It seemed nearly impossible for the home team to breach her defenses as they relentlessly tested her with shots on goal. The match was characterized by its physicality, with both sides accumulating a total of 35 fouls.
With this thrilling victory, the Griffins advanced to the next round of the RMAC Tournament, defying the odds and proving their mettle. They now await the outcome of the game between Colorado Mesa and Metropolitan State University of Denver, with the winner becoming their next opponent in the semifinals.
