Griffins Lock Up Playoff Berth, Down Western Colorado, 73-65

Westminster will host its fourth-straight home postseason game since becoming eligible back in 2018.

GUNNISON, Colo. - Lyndzi Rich had 14 points off of the bench and Westminster women's basketball (17-8, 16-5 RMAC) clinched its fifth-consecutive home postseason game with a 73-65 win over Western Colorado (11-15, 9-12 RMAC) in Saturday night's regular-season finale at Paul Wright Gymnasium.

Ashley Greenwood led the Griffins in scoring with 17 points to go along with six boards and Sarah McGinley had four offensive boards on the night, finishing with 14 points and seven rebounds.  Rae Falatea had a team-leading seven assists to help Westminster finish with a season-high 19 assists as a team.

Westminster opened the game with an 18-5 run and held Western Colorado without a made field goal over the first 3:57.  The Griffins began the game 7-of-8 from the floor as a team and raced out to a 20-7 lead midway through the first.

Westminster cooled offensively in the second quarter but limited Western to just 5-of-13 shooting in the second and 0-6 from behind the arc in the first half.  The Mountaineers closed the half on a 6-2 run to close the Griffins' halftime lead to single digits at, 32-26.

Westminster controlled the pace out of the halftime break extended its lead to 14 with an 11-of-16 (69 percent) shooting third quarter as a team.  After just one made three through the first three quarters, Western Colorado knocked down four-straight three-point attempts to cut the Westminster lead to four with 4:01 to play. 

Abby Mangum picked up a late steal and fastbreak three to push the Griffins lead back to three possessions and the Griffins allowed only one field goal down the stretch to finish off the two-game season sweep of Western.

The Griffins, who began the final day of the regular season in fourth-place in the RMAC women''s basketball standings, will await final results and official postseason seeding from the RMAC as Westminster looks to host its fifth-consecutive first-round conference tournament matchup since becoming eligible in 2018-19.
