SALT LAKE CITY - Westminster women's basketball (14-8, 13-5 RMAC) outscored 13th-ranked Colorado School of Mines (22-3, 17-2 RMAC) in the second half but suffered from a 2-of-10 shooting fourth quarter as a team as Mines stole a 59-54 win on Friday night at Behnken Field House.
Ashley Greenwood scored a game-high 24 points on 7-of-17 shooting as well as 9-of-9 at the free throw line. Westminster suffered from 23 turnovers which the Orediggers were able to convert into 23 points.
Westminster trailed by as many as 14 during the second quarter, going on a 13-0 run to end the first and begin the second, but the Griffins closed the half on a 5-0 run to narrow the gap. Colorado School of Mines had an 18-8 advantage in points off of turnovers after forcing 13 first-half Griffins' turnovers.
After connecting on two of its first three shots of the second half, Westminster held Colorado School of Mines to just 3-of-15 shooting to close out the third quarter and went into the final period on a 12-7 run to get back within a possession. Each of the Griffins' four third-quarter buckets came from inside the paint as Greenwood scored a team-high eight points to help Westminster get back into the game.
The Griffins held Mines to just 4-of-21 shooting (19 percent) from deep but Westminster went just 6-of-21 in the second half and were unable to even the game despite playing within two possessions for the entire fourth quarter.
Westminster wil be back at home tomorrow night as it hosts Regis University, beginning at 5 p.m. The Griffins will honor their graduating senior class of 2022 following the conclusion of Saturday's game and will also be honoring former head coach
Shelley Jarrard for her 200-career-win milestone at halftime.
