Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Grizzlies Outlast Westminster in Back-And-Forth Second Half

Westminster women's basketball finishes its road trip 1-1 after its first ever road loss at Adams State.

ALAMOSA, Colo. - Westminster women's basketball (13-7, 12-4 RMAC) went on a 20-3 run in the third quarter to even the game after trailing by 17, but Adams State (10-13, 8-10 RMAC) held onto a slim lead from start to finish in the fourth to win 71-63 on Saturday night at Plachy Hall.

Sarah McGinley fell just one board shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds on the night while Ashley Greenwood led Westminster in scoring with 15 points to along with seven boards and five assists. Hunter Krebs hit double digit points for a second straight game, finishing with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting and Rae Falatea went 3-of-5 from the floor including a three-pointer that started a double-digit third-quarter comeback from Westminster.

The Griffins had 15 assists as a team on the night, their most since Jan. 29 vs. Fort Lewis (22), but suffered from ASU converted into 26 points off of the Griffins' 23 turnovers.

The loss snaps the Griffins' 11-game winning streak against Adams State and was the first road loss in Alamosa all-time for Westminster.

Westminster and Adams State each went 1-of-5 from behind the arc in the first quarter as the Grizzlies edged out a one-point lead going into the second. ASU then went 4-of-6 long range in the second quarter and held Westminster to just 4-of-12 shooting as a team to carry a 14-point lead into the halftime break.  The Grizzlies began the second half with a made three-pointer, but a quick answer from Falatea sparked the Griffins' 20-3 run that evened the game at 44-44.

After scoring the final five points of the third quarter, the Grizzlies scored off of three-straight Westminster turnovers to craft a game-high eight-point lead midway through the fourth.  The Griffins had their most efficient offensive quarter of the game, finishing 8-of-15 (54 percent) in the fourth, but ASU matched the Griffins offensively down the stretch and connected on 7-of-10 free throws in the final quarter to hold off a late Westminster comeback attempt.

Westminster will return home and prepare to host a Tuesday night game against MSU Denver at Behnken Field House, tipping-off at 5:30 p.m.  For tickets vist westminstergriffins.com/tickets.
