GOLDEN, Colo. - Ashley Greenwood scored a career-high 29 points and Westminster women's basketball (8-5, 7-2 RMAC) finished 22-of-43 (54 percent) from the floor as a team but No. 13 Colorado School of Mines (15-1, 10-0 RMAC) finished with 22 steals as a team and saw one extra possession in overtime and connected on a layup at the buzzer from Ashley Steffeck to win, 68-66, on Saturday night at Lockridge Arena.
Greenwood's 29 points were the most for a Westminster women's basketball player since February of 2019 (Olivia Elliss, 31 vs at Adams St., 2/16/19) and outpaced all other players on the court in Saturday night's overtime thriller. Westminster finished with a 39-35 edge on the glass but suffered from a season-high 28 turnovers which Mines converted into 32 points.
Colorado School of Mines began the week as the top-scoring offense in the RMAC at 74.8 points per game, but Westminster was able to limit Colorado School of Mines to just 24-of-75 (32 percent) shooting overall. The Orediggers' shooters were limited to just 3-of-19 (16 percent) from three-point range but Colorado School of Mines finished the game with more offensive boards then defensive, pulling in 20 offensive rebounds to finish with 25 second-chance points.
Westminster finished the first quarter on a 9-3 run and then held Mines to 0-of-4 from three and just 4-of-17 overall to outscore the Orediggers, 18-11 in the second quarter. The Griffins racked up 10 assists as a team in the first half and shot 13-of-20 (65 percent) from the field as a team to begin the game. The Griffins led by as many as six in the third quarter but Colorado School of Mines kept the game close throughout the contest with the help of an RMAC record 14 steals from Ashley Steffeck.
Greenwood eventually put Westminster ahead by five with 2:59 to play with an and-one and pair of made free throws in back-to-back possessions. Mines would later force back-to-back turnovers and converted each into points to cut the Griffins' lead to just one with 1:35 to play. Denali Pinto missed on her first attempt, but converted a second free throw for Mines to even the game at 56-56. The Griffins would have the final look at a game-winner but were unable to convert on two chances in the paint at the end regulation.
Both teams traded buckets to begin the overtime period before trading the lead several times at the free throw line in the game's final two minutes. Greenwood put Westminster in front by one with a pair of free throws that were answered just seconds later by Pinto.
Caitlyn Okerlund went to the line and evened the game for the 12th time with just 17 seconds to play in the overtime period but Steffeck was able to convert on a driving layup at the buzzer to give Mines its 11th-consecutive win.
The Griffins will continue their road trip onto Chadron, Neb., as they make-up their road contest at Chadron State on Monday, Jan. 24, beginning at 2 p.m.
