SALT LAKE CITY - Westminster men's basketball connected on a season-high 11 three-pointers as a team to beat MSU Denver (12-3, 6-3 RMAC), 80-55, on Saturday night at the Behnken Field House.
The Griffins 80 points scored was just one shy of its season-high total that it reached back on Dec. 4 also against MSU Denver. Westminster held six-time RMAC Player of the Week, Laolu Oke, to just six points on 2-of-6 shooting while the Westminster front court of
Brayden Johnson,
Lewis Johnson andÂ
Yusuf Mohamed combined for 39 points on 17-of-24 (75 percent) shooting as a group.
Reme Torbert finished 4-of-9 from behind the arc and led Westminster with 19 points to go along with five assists. Mohamed finished with 16 points and four rebounds whileÂ
Lewis Johnson (13) and
Brayden Johnson (10) also finished the night in double figures out of the Griffins' front court.
Matt Kitzman was one of the few Griffins who struggled to find his shot and finished the night just 1-of-8 from the field shooting, but the point guard from Draper, Utah, pulled in a team-leading eight boards and also had five assists and three steals in the final box score. Kitzman also helped hold the Roadrunners leading scorer, Ra'Shawn Langston, to just 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting.
MSU Denver saw its biggest lead of the game after an and-one at the 15:35 mark of the first half. Westminster made a pair of quick defensive stops and layups to cut into the MSU Denver lead and
Reme Torbert hit a three to put Westminster ahead by one at the 13:39 mark of the opening half and the Griffins would never trail again.
The Griffins led by six at the break and knocked down four field goals that included three from behind the arc in the opening minutes of the second half. The Griffins connected on 7-of-17 (41 percent) second-half three's as they watched MSU Denver shoot just 4-of-13 from deep in the second. Westminster pushed its lead to 20 for the first time at the 7:30 mark of the second half and never had its lead in jeopardy down the final stretch to beat MSU Denver for the second time this season.
The Griffins are now 8-3 all-time after back-to-back wins over the Roadrunners and are a perfect 5-0 against MSU Denver at home in the Behnken Field House. The win gives the Griffins some much-needed RPI points as MSU Denver came into the game with five straight RMAC wins.
Westminster will be back on the road next weekend as it travels back to Denver to play at Regis and Colorado School of Mines next Friday and Saturday night, respectively.
