SALT LAKE CITY - Westminster men's basketball (7-8, 5-4 RMAC) pulled in a season-high 43 rebounds and finished with 28 points in the paint as a team on Friday night in a 60-47 win over Colorado Christian (4-10, 1-7 RMAC) at the Behnken Field House. Per Westminster College COVID-19 safety measures, Friday night's contest was played without any fans in attendance.
Reme Torbert and
Brayden Johnson each finished with a team-leading 15 points while Johnson led the Griffins with seven rebounds that included four on the offensive end to help Westminster finish with 11 second-chance points. Westminster shot just 41 percent (22-of-54) from the floor as a team and connected on just a single three in the second half, but the Griffins allowed just two offensive rebounds in the entire game and CCU, which began the night No. 1 in the RMAC in three's per game (10.0) and No. 1 in three-point shooting (.383), was held to just 18-of-49 (37 percent) shooting overall and 9-of-29 (31 percent) from behind the arc.
CCU was able to get its shot in the opening half and went 7-of-16 from deep in the opening half to keep the game close, leading for a majority of the opening twenty minutes before Westminster snatched the lead back on a
Matt Kitzman layup with less than a minute to play before half.
Westminster led by two at the break and connected on four of the first five made field goals after halftime to push its lead to nine early in the second half. CCU would go on an ensuing 5-0 run out of a timeout to get back within four, but finished just 2-of-13 from three in the second half as Westminster controlled the game and nursed its lead into the game's final minutes.
The Griffins are now 10-2 all-time against Colorado Christian after sweeping the season series and have never lost at home, improving to a perfect 6-0 against the Cougars in Salt Lake City following Friday's win.
Westminster see an opportunity to improve its RPI positioning on Saturday as it welcomes MSU Denver (12-2, 6-2 RMAC) into the Behnken Field House beginning at 7 p.m.
