SALT LAKE CITY — Westminster men's soccer (0-1) fell to Humboldt State (1-0), 2-0, on Thursday night at Dumke Field. The Griffins' home opener nearly bled into Friday, as a pair of lightning delays caused kickoff to be pushed back by nearly an hour and a second-half stoppage that caused the game to run until nearly midnight local time.
Westminster controlled much of the play in a scoreless opening half and finished ahead of the Lumberjacks in total shots, 14-8. Humboldt's chances would prove more opportunistic in the end, however, as a 65th minute run from Marco Silveira was lifted into the top right hand side of
Ian Rose's net. Rose was forced into action on five saves on just eight toal shots from Humboldt State.
With the Griffins pushing their back line in an effort to find a late equalizer, a quick counter allowed Marco Silveira to slide a ball over to Daniel Adeyeye who capitalized on a 1v1 chance to put Humboldt State on top, 2-0.
Westminster will look to bounce back on Saturday night when they play host to San Francisco State back at Dumke Field. Kickoff for Saturday's match is set for 7:30 p.m. (MDT).
