AZUSA, Calif. - Westminster volleyball (2-5) was unable to keep pace with an unbeaten Cal Poly Pomona (7-0) in a 3-1 loss on Saturday night to conclude the SoCal Freeway Challenge tournament co-hosted by Azusa Pacific and Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Griffins dropped their first match of the day, 3-1, to Azusa Pacific (5-3).
Match 1 Recap - Westminster at Azusa Pacific
Westminster volleyball (2-4) had a .306 attack percentage in a 25-23 third-set win, but finished at just .146 as a team in a 3-1 loss to Azusa Pacific (5-3) to begin day two of the SoCal Freeway Challenge Tournament at the Felix Event Center on Saturday.
Katie Jacox led the Griffins with 14 kills and
Bri Mortensen added another 35 assists as the Griffins' setter. Libero
Alanna Lee had 21 digs while Jacox (11) and Mortensen (9) did their best to support a Griffins' defense that faced 65 kills on just 146 attempts (.370) from Azusa Pacific.
Westminster responded to a slow start with 16 kills on 36 swings (.306) to win in the third set 25-23 but Azusa Pacific responded with a 25-11 fourth set win.
Match 2 Recap - Westminster vs. Cal Poly Pomona
Facing the only unbeaten team in the tournament, Westminster won the second set 25-15 to even the match at 1-1. The Griffins had just two attack errors in the second frame but suffered from 10 combined errors in the third and fourth sets, falling to Cal Poly Pomona by a final line of 25-22, 15-25, 25-13, 25-17.
Freshman
Regan Jackson had a season-best and team-high 12 kills in addition to Lydia Miller's 11.
Westminster held an 11-3 advantage in total blocks but Cal Poly Pomona still managed to rack up 62 kills as a team, hitting .236 as a unit in the 3-1 victory.
