NAMPA, Idaho - Carlos Becerra-Gomez found the net in the seventh minute and
Skyler Kjellander found an insurance goal in the ninth as Westminster men's soccer (1-3) earned a 3-0 halftime lead and kept Montana State Billings (1-3-1) off of the score sheet in the second half for its first win of the season on Saturday at the NNU Soccer Field.
Following a scoreless first three matches to the season and fresh off of a match in which Westminster was down to 10 men for the majority of the match (Thurs. vs. NNU), the Griffins came storming out of the gates offensively two quick goals in the opening nine minutes of the match.
Westminster was called for an early offside as it pressed for an early goal and in just the seventh minute,
Carlos Becerra-Gomez had an unassisted goal on the first shot attempt of the afternoon for Westminster.
On the Griffins second attempted shot on the day,
Skyler Kjellander, struck the back of the net to give Westminster a 2-0 lead just nine minutes into the match.
Kjellander forced another save from MSU Billings keeper, Georgios Theodoulidis, just two minutes later as Westminster continued to force the issue to start the match.
Ian Rose made a series of four quick saves to answer a run of offensive pressure from MSU Billings and in the 30th minute, Becerra-Gomez found
Luke Merrill who buried his first goal of the season to put the Griffins on top 3-0.
Westminster carried the three-goal advantage into the halftime break and Rose finished with six total saves as the Griffins earned their first win of the season.
Westminster men's soccer will travel for one final weekend of non-conference matches, taking on Midwestern State - Texas next Thursday at 6:30 p.m. (MDT), followed by a match against Texas A&M International on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 1:30 p.m. (MDT).
