SALT LAKE CITY—Westminster's men's soccer team won its home-opener against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
Max Bingman and
Kaden Amano scored in the Griffins (2-1-1, 2-0-1 RMAC) 2-1 win.
Bingman scored for the Griffins and Jack Souder scored for the Mountain Lions in a 1-1 first half tie. Bingman's chance came in the 13
th minute after a failed clearance. Bingman quickly got to the loose ball and beat the outstretched keeper with a left-footed shot to the upper right corner from 25 yards.
Six minutes later UCCS equalized with a header at the right post. A deep throw-in from the left was flicked on to the right post by Nic Grotle. Souder rose above the Griffin defenders to nod the ball in.
Bingman came close to scoring the game-winner when a UCCS turnover played him into a one-on-one. Bingman dribbled around the keeper to the right and shot for the lower-right corner but a sliding defender kept the ball from crossing the line. Bingman, who had fallen to the ground, centered the ball to Amano for the game-winner from the penalty spot.
Westminster's defense stood strong for the win as UCCS took four shots in the final three minutes.
Marshall Johnson and Bingman led the team in shots with four each. Bingman had three on goal and Johnson had one goal. Amano had three shots and scored the game-winner with his only shot on target.
Noah Larkin made two first half saves and had a quiet second half with the defense allowing no shots on target in the second half.
